Have you questioned your belief system?

Who am I? That is a question I was faced with when I looked into the mirror one morning and a face stared back at me (Chapter 5). I could tell what I was doing and whom I was related to. I was like many other people, trying to juggle daily life and all its demands. I had no idea how to answer that question. I could say I am a perfectionist and I like to help people, but I felt a “lostness” in myself. It was impossible to describe the emptiness and sadness that looked back at me.

I mentioned before that my background was conservative. Like many Afrikaans-speaking, Christian households, I went to church and Sunday school, and believed with the faith of a child, but during my time of depression, I lost my faith in God. For many years, I would hear Spirit’s voice, but I was a rebel. I said to God, “I am not going to do the work because it is too difficult.” Although I went through a time when I felt godforsaken, and read widely about world religions, I tend to agree with Mahatma Gandhi who said, “God has no religion.”

Religion is a manmade structure created by the followers of great prophets who lived and preached love. Fear motivation was brought into the structure by religious leaders to control their followers. Unfortunately, when fear walks in, love is often suppressed. I remember how shocked I was when I found many truths were left out of the Bible because those who compiled it knew certain truths would give the people too much power. The wonder is, in spite of inconsistencies, the Bible is still one of the most widely read books in the world.

I do not care what you call God. I do not see God as a person anymore, but God’s energy can take many forms and has been given many names. I call God Spirit of my Soul. In moments of bitterness and despair, I have shouted at God, and like a naughty child, I have told God, “If there is a Jesus, He can find me.” I was tired of looking for Him. I often say God can take our shouting.

God found me — standing naked under the shower. Many times, I have felt closest to Spirit under the shower. You cannot go anywhere under the shower; you have to listen to what is said. I often have discussions with God in the shower, and in the beginning, I thought it was my overactive mind thinking up all these stories. Then synchronicities started to happen. I would think of something under the shower and then hear a song or a sermon or open one of my spiritual books or cards and see the same words.
